Domains and verification

A site is one banner for one or more domains. The banner records choices only on the domains you list, and verifying a domain proves it is yours.

Domains

  • List every domain the banner runs on, one per line (Settings → Domains): example.com and www.example.com are separate.
  • On any other address the banner still shows and still asks, but the choice is not recorded, so the visitor is asked again on the next page. The browser console names the address to add.
  • Staging domains work exactly like the live site, but their visits are test data: not counted in analytics, experiments or benchmarks, and never scanned.
  • Sharing choices across domains: a visitor following a link to another of the site's domains is not asked again. Subdomains of one domain share choices already.

Verification

A domain works as soon as you add it. Verifying it proves it is yours:

  • No other Trackable CMP account can add a verified domain.
  • Someone else who typed your domain into their account before you does not block you: their unverified claim is removed once you verify.
  • The Shopify app and server-side tracking (Trackable SST) connect only to verified domains.

Settings → Domains shows each domain as Verified or Not verified yet, with the reason. It verifies by itself in either of these ways, and Verify now checks straight away.

1. Your banner on the homepage

Once this site's banner is on the domain's homepage, the domain is verified. We read the page as a browser would, including Google Tag Manager containers it loads, and look for the site's key. The page must stay on the same domain: a redirect to another domain does not count. Unverified domains are checked again automatically, at first every few minutes, then less often.

2. A DNS record

For a domain whose homepage we cannot read (behind a login, or not live yet), add a TXT record. Settings → Domains shows it with your site's own value:

Type TXT
Name _trackable-cmp.example.com
Value trackable-cmp-verify=YOUR_SITE_TOKEN

A record on example.com also verifies its subdomains, such as www.example.com and shop.example.com.

“Verified by another account”

Someone else proved control of that domain. If it is yours, write to us from an address at that domain and we will sort it out.
